Troubleshooting Microsoft Outlook Express |
|
This article assumes that you have set up your e-mail account in Outlook Express. For more information about setting up Outlook Express for the first time, go to Configuring Microsoft Outlook Express.
If you are having trouble sending and/or receiving e-mail using Outlook Express, perform the following steps:
From the Tools menu, click Options.

From the Send tab, click to clear Send messages immediately.

Click OK.
From the Tools menu, click Accounts.

From the Mail tab, click to choose your Account.

Click Properties.
From the General tab, verify that Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing is selected.

From the Servers tab, verify that the Incoming mail (POP3) For example, mail.your-domain.com. and the Outgoing mail (SMTP) servers are correct. Your POP3 server is your registered domain name. Your SMTP server is mail followed by your registered domain name. For example, mail.your-domain.com.

If your ISP is blocking port 25, you will not be able to use your domain name's SMTP server. In this case, you will need to use the SMTP server provided by your ISP. If you follow the troubleshooting steps in this article and suspect that port 25 is being blocked, contact your ISP to verify that it is and to acquire the ISP SMTP server address.
Verify that your account name and password are correct.
Account name is the POP ID that you selected when you created your POP account. For example, if you created the POP account "myname@forexample-domain.com," you would enter myname as your Account name. To verify that your password is correct, enter the Password for this e-mail account.

Verify that Log on using Secure Password Authentication and My server requires authentication are clear.
From the Advanced tab, verify that all check boxes are clear. Verify that Server Port Numbers are 25 for SMTP, and 110 for POP3.

Click OK.
Click Close. You should now be able to send and/or receive e-mail.
