HORIZONS magazine has been published by Mission Services since January of 1951. Since that time, it has gone through several transformations in size, style and publication cycles. It is now a full size, full color monthly magazine. The one thing that has been constant has been its purpose. HORIZONS continues to be devoted to publishing news about cross-cultural mission work among the independent Christian Churches and Churches of Christ. Only six men have served as Editors of HORIZONS:
Harrold McFarland January 1951 - June 1972
Clifford Schaub July
1972 - May 1973
Richard Bourne June 1973 - December 1979
Howard Ray January 1980 - May 1987
Norman Weaver June 1987 - December 1996
Reggie Hundley December 1996 - present.
Each issue contains several items of interest to Christians around the world. Two articles will focus on ministry in a particular country, and one of those will focus on the life of women. A Prayer Calendar is a part of each issue. Based on the number of days in the upcoming month, there will be prayer requests from individuals and ministries from all over the world. The Editor is charged with the responsibility of offering an opinion that will cause readers to think. The remaining articles will be of varied interest. Some focus upon the lives and ministry of long term servants, while others will feature information concerning youth groups and short-term mission trips. Whenever possible, an issue will include brief introductions of new mission recruits and news items submitted by missionaries. A unique role of this publication is that the articles are written by missionaries serving in a particular country rather than by professional writers.
The magazine has historically been provided free to active missionaries. Due to the high cost of international postage, MSA does ask that any missionary wishing to receive the magazine pay for that postage. Individuals wishing to subscribe should contact Georgia Sharpe. She may be reached via email, by mail or phone as noted on the Contact Us page of this web site.
